Islamic marriage ceremony ruled as void marriage: Family lawyers react

Head of Family Deborah Jeff commented on last week’s Court of Appeal ruling on the religious Islamic marriage ceremony, known as Nikah. Deborah gives her expert opinion on the landmark ruling, which has established Nikah as a void marriage. 

Deborah warned that the ruling will have “huge repercussions for couples who have ‘married’ by way of a religious Nikah ceremony without following up with a civil ceremony.” Deborah explained that the current “out of date law discriminates against the homemaker and their contribution to family life.”
