Helen Crossland Writes in People Management

Partner in the Employment team, Helen Crossland, features in People Management exploring new legislation around day one right to unfair dismissal.

Helen Crossland, Partner in the Employment team, wrote an article that has been published in People Management. Helen explores the impact of the Labour government’s proposed legislation to protect employees from unfair dismissal from the first day of their employment.

“Many businesses are understandably unsettled by this and other proposals in the bill. Their uppermost concerns are the cost and work that will be involved in updating employment documentation and processes, training/upskilling managers to ensure compliance with new legislation, and the financial and litigation risks to their organisation if changes are not properly implemented or understood internally.”

“Change is not going to happen this year. The bill will need to go through the parliamentary process, and proposals may be subject to amendment. Some initiatives may be delayed or shelved, with others requiring substantial consultation before they can sensibly be rolled out. In all likelihood, the main changes, including day-one unfair dismissal rights, will not be implemented until either October 2025 or April 2026.”
