Training Programme

We aim to give you hands-on training in a supportive environment, developing your legal knowledge, confidence and skills as you complete each seat.

Why Us?

We aim to provide our trainees with a diverse and hands on training experience in a genuinely supportive environment, ensuring that your legal knowledge, confidence and professional skills grow with each seat you complete. From the very beginning of the programme, every trainee is paired with a dedicated mentor, as well as a supervisor in each department, with additional guidance from their Head of Department. Our trainees also benefit from direct access to Partners within their team, allowing them to take an active role in meaningful work from day one.

As you progress, you will be encouraged to use your own initiative on matters, develop strong client relationships, and build the practical judgement needed for a successful career in the legal service. The trainee experience includes training sessions, regular feedback and genuine opportunities to contribute, ensuring that by the end of the programme you are fully equipped to successfully transition into a capable solicitor.

Throughout the two-year programme and beyond, trainee development is supported by John Midgley, Training Principal, and the People & Culture team, who are committed to helping you reach your full potential.

During the Training Programme

As a full-service firm, trainees benefit from the opportunity to rotate through four different departments over the course of their two-year training programme. While we aim to take individual preferences into account, we cannot guarantee specific seat allocations, as these depend on business needs and availability. With a long history in property law, it is highly likely that at least two of your seats will be in one of our Real Estate departments.

However, our goal is always to ensure each trainee completes their programme with a well-rounded and valuable experience across a range of practice areas. This approach enables you to explore your strengths in both contentious and non-contentious work, refine your interests, and build a solid foundation for the next stage of your legal career. Departments available include:

  • Clinical Negligence
  • Commercial Real Estate
  • Corporate & Commercial
  • Dispute Resolution
  • Employment
  • Family
  • Real Estate Disputes
  • Residential Real Estate
  • Real Estate Finance

Meet our Training Principal – John Midgley

John has been a Partner at Seddons GSC since 2008. Outside of his role in Real Estate Disputes and Head of Specialist Leasehold Enfranchisement, John has been the firm’s training principal for over 12 years.

‘Seddons GSC take our responsibility to train the next generation of solicitors seriously. We are committed to providing our trainees with a roadmap through their training contract, high quality hands-on experience and a grounding shaped by experienced lawyers within the teams they work and the mentors they are matched with for guidance and support.

At the end of the training contract, I must demonstrate to our regulator, the SRA, that in order for a trainee to be admitted to the roll of solicitors that they have fulfilled their training commitments (including the professional skills courses) and meet the standards required.

It has been a real pleasure to see so many trainee candidates pass through our training programme over this time with many going on to be colleagues at the firm, some of whom have become my partners. I think that says it all!’

Hear from some of our current trainees

Ellen is currently in her 4th training seat in our Employment team, having previously rotated between Commercial Real Estate, Dispute Resolution and Private Client.

What inspired you to become a solicitor?

I always wanted to be in a role where I could help people, and as a solicitor I will be able to use the knowledge I have gained to guide and support people through significant moments in their lives.

Why did you choose Seddons GSC over others when applying to training contracts?

Having previously worked at the firm as a Paralegal, I had an insight into the firm’s supportive culture and commitment to development, which made me confident it was the right place to grow as a trainee. I also liked the fact that the trainee intake is small, with only three trainees per year, as this suggested greater opportunity to secure seats that aligned with my interests, and more time and focus could be dedicated to our training.

What does a typical day look like as a trainee?

A typical day for me starts when I get into the office around 9am, I make a coffee and try to grab a snack from the kitchen before the best ones go! I go through my emails to action anything urgent and then work through my to-do list which often consists of research tasks, drafting documents and, in my current seat, preparing documentation and materials for Tribunal proceedings. At lunch, I usually catch up with colleagues in the kitchen area before heading back to my desk to continue with my tasks. Throughout the day, I may also attend internal and/or client meetings and often have catch up calls with members of my team to discuss matters or get updates on cases. No two days are exactly the same, which keeps things interesting and varied.

How does the firm support your ongoing development and growth?

We have regular reviews at the midpoint and end of each seat, where we receive structured feedback and clear goals. I also have frequent contact with my supervisors and colleagues, making it easy to receive guidance and support on the spot. Each trainee is also assigned a mentor, typically a senior associate in the firm, who is available for regular catch-ups and general advice.

What types of work have you been involved in during your seat rotations?

During my seat rotations, I have been involved in a wide range of work that has given me significant client exposure. From handling initial enquiry calls before a client formally instructs the firm, to supporting transactions through to completion, I have been actively engaged at every stage. Trainees often play a key role in client communication, including attending meetings and assisting with ongoing matters. While in the Litigation department, I had the opportunity to observe court hearings and participate in a mediation, which was invaluable experience.

How would you describe the culture of the firm?

The firm has a very sociable and inclusive culture. Our social committee regularly organises events throughout the year, creating opportunities for colleagues to connect outside of work. We also take part in fun initiatives such as the recent PLA Step Challenge, which encouraged everyone to stay active. During the summer, our running club brings together members from across different teams for weekly runs to and around Regent’s Park. Overall, I believe the firm offers a good work/life balance.

Can you describe a particular memorable or difficult project you worked on?

Right at the start of my Employment seat, we received a new instruction for an unfair dismissal claim. Initially, we were of the understanding that the case was in its early stages but soon discovered that the final hearing date had already been set and disclosure deadlines were fast approaching. This meant we had to act quickly and work efficiently to protect our client’s position and achieve the best possible outcome. It was a great learning experience because I got to see the different stages of an unfair dismissal claim.

What’s your proudest moment so far in your training contract?

I’ve learned to adapt quickly to challenging situations throughout my training contract. There have been times where I have been thrown in at the deep end and had to take on tasks outside of my comfort zone. Getting through those situations has really boosted my confidence and proved that, even when things feel uncertain, you can find solutions and move forward.

What has surprised you most about a department seat you have been in?

I was most surprised by my Private Client seat. I started the seat with only a basic idea of what this area involved, but I quickly realised how complex and varied it is. The work goes far beyond what I expected and involves a wide range of matters. The depth of knowledge required, and regular client contact really stood out to me and made the seat both interesting and rewarding. My experience in this seat has inspired me to qualify in this area.

What advice would you give to students applying for a training contract?

Thoroughly research the firm you are applying to and try to showcase what you know in the application and interview process. It is also worth reaching out to people who already work at the firm to ask them what the firm is like as this can assist with the application process and also help you decide whether it is the right firm for you. Be yourself during the interview stages as firms aren’t just looking at academics, they are looking for people who will fit into their culture.
