Family Partner Catherine Hancock Features in Financial Times

Family Partner Catherine Hancock discusses rights of cohabitees in response to a reader’s question in the Financial Times.

“My partner and I have been in a relationship for 10 years and have lived together for five. My partner is the sole owner of our house, but I help make mortgage payments and we combine our finances and split all living costs equally. Recently, my partner was in a car accident and while they were thankfully OK, it got me thinking about what would happen to the property and our finances if one of us suddenly died. Should we sign a cohabiting agreement? Is there a timeframe for when you’re able to sign one? My partner’s will has been updated to state that the property would go tome if they died, but since we are not married, is that enough?”
